Need help with a (simple?) Google Maps feature

Hello everyone. I have been lurking for awhile, but just joined the forum today.
Here is my story, and I will follow it with my idea, which hopefully someone can help me with.

I am an avid fisherman from Minnesota. I bass fish all summer, and ice fish all winter. I own the Eris, and am 200% pleased with it, and equally impressed with it's GPS functionality. I use it all of the time, and rely upon it's accuracy.

Here is what I want to do. I want to take the lake maps (with depth charts) from the DNR website and overlay them onto the actual Google Maps images. So, when I access that app, it will show my location, but added would be the water depths that I overlaid onto the map. It seems easy enough to do, but I am too dumb to do it.

Here is a rough sample of my intentions. Does anyone know someone who would be interested in teaching me how to do this, or someone who would help develop the app?

Welcome to the forum Daffy- I'm a native gopher-stater too (living in Chicago now) and your idea is a very good one. The problem is that the map app downloads the maps from the net everytime you use it, rather than storing them in your phone, so it would be difficult to overlay depth charts. There are some map apps on the market that allow you to DL and store maps on the sd card, so you might try one of them and maybe you can use your computer to overlay the images.

Or maybe call the DNR and tell them to make an android app!

The one in the market is a free demo but I think he sells it on his website for $10.

You take a picture or download the image with your phone of the lake map with the overlay on top of it. Just a photo of the DNR picture should work just fine. You set 2 reference points. Where you are now and where you are 100 feet or so away. After the reference points are determined the GPS will follow you on the picture you took of the lake.

Don't know if it would be accurate enough to do what you are looking for but you can activate the terrian layer menu>more>labs>terrain. You can then activate the terrain and satelite view layers over the map. Menue>layers>satelite and terrian. Also turn on the compass arrow in labs and the scale. Best I can think of.

Hey guys, thanks for the welcome, and the advice. I wish that Lowrance, Lakemaster, Garmin or SOMEBODY would develop an app for this. There are apps for the iPhony that do exactly what I want, but I am not gonna ever be an iBrat. I love the Eris too much, besides, it is running smoother than ever, bug-free on 2.1 now. Seems that with the new google maps with 2.1, the lake map feature would be easier yet. I will try that Viamici demo, and let you know how it works. Spring is in the air!!!
