Help Need help with OTG

tch65721

Lurker
I have checked out the OTG with a mouse and it works but I can't seem to work out how to use a jump drive and stream via the OTG cable.
The movie app (MX Player) doesn't automatically find the movies or see the jump drive. Any help?

It's all personal choice. For me, I like the screenshot button, because I could never get the power/vol button thing to work.

I like it as well. A touch sensitivity option woulda been a nice touch, to prevent inadvertent screenshots.

Yeah, touch sensitivity, or perhaps two buttons that require simultaneous touch. Anything to prevent accidentally doing a capture.

Even if you root, that app might be your best bet. I've tried most if not all of the free USB OTG utilities. None work although USB OTG Helper responds but won't mount a flash drive. I've sent the developer at XDA a log to see if he cn help.

Well, that's disappointing but not critical. I thought I read somewhere that OTG was "enabled". I guess that doesn't include mounting a flash drive. Just checking things out to make sure everything is working as it should and I guess it is. Now if that mini-HDMI --> HDMI cable would get here...

I have had zero issues with using OTG for memory sticks, card adaptors, etc. I play movies from a flash drive using MX Player and NMI.

You are correct about OTG being enabled, but not for external memory. That seems self defeating to me, but NMI gets you around the problem for most things. For me, I would rather pay for NMI to solve this little problem than to put up with all the hassles associated with rooting. Rooting causes headaches every time you have an update. :(

True about the updates. But, if the developer(s) keep up with OS changes, that is a big help. As for me, the biggest factor on rooting was the limited RAM and desire to move data and apps to a microSD card. This is working OK for me except that either newer Jelly Bean 4.2.1 vs Honeycomb 3.1 I have on my Thrive (or the way the Toshiba Thrive handles data) seems to still use a lot of memory for some app & data even when moving same. And that leaves little data for say captured pixs & vid clips from a real camera you want to transfer OTG before you get home. I'm at about 50% available with about 150-160 total apps including system ones and some pre-loaded but retained after rooting. Going to stay at this level for a bit and see how it runs. The un-rooted 16 Gb Thrive has only about 3 Gb memory reserved for apps and I have 20-30 more loaded.

I've not received any response from the developer. Some people on android forums say they can read USB without utilities. My micro USB port is kind of flaky and won't although a wireless keyboard that uses a dongle does work. Before calling for my 3 yr extended warranty (kind of reluctant to return it).
I final d/ld Nexus Media Importer and it works great for the flash drives I've tried.

If they are telling us that they can read external memory plugged into the USB port without using a utility of some kind, and/or being rooted, then they are mistaken. The tablet simply isn't designed to work that way. I'm not actually from Missouri, but I want to see it, if that's what they are claiming. It's not going to happen on a stock machine.

He claims to have uninstalled 'Nexus Media Importer' and still reads flash USB. Says he only needs the app for high capacity drives.

Yeah, he does claim that. But then, he did have NMI installed at one point. I'm thinking it didn't do a clean un-install, because the tablet certainly won't do that without first having installed NMI...

That is something I will have to play with to see if I can get my tablet to do it also.
