Need help with private cloud server

kwrinn

Lurker
just as the title says. The machine is used as my workstation, gamer, minecraft server, and NAS/Cloud server all in one

Server specs:
Windows 7 Ultimate
Fx-8150 @ 4.7ghz, h100 cooling in push-pull
Asrock 970 Extreme 4
32gb Corsair Vengance ram @ 1866, CL 9
2 120gb samsung 830 series SSDs in Raid0
1 32gb ocz Synapse Cache ssd (for hard drive raid below)
5 3tb seagate baracuuda XT in raid 5 (software raid)
2 XFX 6950 2gb double-d video cards flashed to 6970 firmware, 1007mhz o/c
dual-gigabit intel lan card
Google Fiber :D

I would love to be running debian, but since this machine is a gamer as well as everything else, I must run windows.

Here's what I need advice with. currently, I am using Emit, PhoneMyPc, Vplayer, and FileLinx pro for all my server connecting with my andriods, and server side I am running all the above plus NeroMediaHome for DLNA. I am wondering what people recommend for cloud server software. I loved the way Zumocast was set up with my Atrix, but I realized how heavy it was on the server very quickly, and it wasn't a seamless integration for me.

so, what's all out there??

When you say "cloud", what exactly do you want? I use me (Linux admittedly) box as an ftp server. I can access all my files remotely or internally using any ftp client. Computer and android. Using estrongs and solid at the moment. Works great

what i want is for my videos, photos, contacts, etc. to automatically upload to my server when the android is connected to wifi. not something like an FTP, I already use FileLinx for that.
since i use so many different devices, it would be nice to have everything synced to and accessible from one place. Not only this, but having that "peace of mind" with all of my personal data would be amazing.

Set up FreeNAS in a virtualmachine. Or JeOS Debian with owncloud LAMP web app.
You can rsync (there are Android rsync apps) that will synch photos/videos. Dont know about contacts.

Or by a cheap $20 pogoplug. Pogoplug has an app that syncs in the background. Works with smartphones. No need to open firewall ports or do port forwarding.
If you don't like the pogoplug default software, hack it. It is better than a Rasberry PI for hacking into a server.
You can hack a pogoplug to run archlinux and thats what I do.
It consumes 4 watts, runs rsyncd server, netatalk, samba, transmission, NFS, apache/mysql off a USB stick. I have about 10 of them working in a cluster arrangement.

Ok so with a NAS, I use an application called "foldersync" which I set to run on a schedule. Overnight on wifi suits me. This can also be used externally if your router is set to port forward to your NAS.

Also it works in conjunction with Tasker so you can setup almost any criteria you want to trigger a backup.

I have foldersync and tasker but I just alternative backup each night (internal and external sd cards) so I don't need to use tasker functionality.
