Need one-handed voice memo app

My husband has an old HP iPaq which is near the end of the road. He's remapped one of the hardware buttons so that he can pull the phone out, press a button, and immediately start recording a memo to himself. He needs to be able to do this with one hand, and without looking at the screen.

I'm trying to help him find a new phone; he'd prefer Android, but I can't find any phone with a dedicated voice memo button, nor any other solution to his problem. There appears to be no way to remap a button without rooting the phone. As it is, he would have to press the menu button, then swipe to awaken the screen, then press an app or widget. It's almost impossible to do all this with one hand and without looking at the screen.

He may have to go back to the old-fashioned standalone voice memo recorder. Does anyone have a solution to suggest?

Thanks for any help

I dont know of any way to remap hardware buttons.

However, you could use widgetlocker to customise your lockscreen and place a shortcut to the memo app directly on it, which would save having to swipe to unlock the phone.
