Need to disable dialer

I gave my son my stylo3 I need to disable the dialer.how can I do this ?I already know putting it on airplane mode does the trick but I want the dialer gone.

You have options,
Long press the phone icon and remove it from the desktop, disable the phone app in your list of apps in the settings menu,
Or you can even install a different launcher from the play store that will also hide the phone icon from the app drawer.

Not all phones will let you disable the dialer - if the manufacturer decided this was a vital app then the option will be greyed out (it is on mine, I just checked).

It really depends on the technical competence of your son. If he knows nothing then removing the icon from the desktop or using a launcher that allows you to hide apps from the app drawer will do the job. If he knows his way around Android then you'll need something more drastic, such as an app that lets you password protect other apps (even then he could install another dialer, so you need to password protect the Play Store too). If "airplane mode" is considered adequate then it sounds like he's at the lower end of the knowledge scale, but don't underestimate the ingenuity of kids at finding thing ;).

I agree that "remove the SIM card" is the simplest answer. No SIM, no service.
(Unless you are using a CDMA provider, in which case the SIM may only be needed for LTE. We don't have those in most of the world, but pre-LTE they didn't use SIMs at all so I'm not sure whether the current ones require a SIM for voice service).

Actually the girl at the phone store put the sim card in backwards.but he was still able to call 911.hes autistic and loves to take pictures.i will try to do a long press and remove the dialer.nothing wakes you up faster then the police at your door because your kid called 911.

If you install another launcher, like Nova, you can totally remove the app from the app drawer, even if it can't be disabled.
Another useful feature is the ability to lock the apps in place on the home screen.
