The Captivate is nice, but until it's rooted you'll be a "Captive" of AT&T's agenda (which most certainly does NOT include giving you the liberty to install whatever you damn well please on the expensive phone you own, and pay high monthly fees for the ability to use).

AFAIK, AT&T hasn't screwed up the Desire yet (assuming they even offer it directly)... but even if they have, you can always spend an amount that amortizes out to an extra $10-20/month over 18-36 months and buy an unlocked Desire intended for Europe (they support 850/1900 UMTS, too). (DISCLAIMER: I'm a Sprint customer and know what I do about the Desire because it was *almost* the phone that got me to leave Sprint... and might have succeeded if the original model supported T-Mobile's UMTS frequencies. I've also seen plenty of threads pointing out the appropriateness of the first 7 letters of the "Captivate's" name in light of the carrier and its practices).

HTC also doesn't have a core strategy which leads to Android fragmentation. For example, desire doesn't have the advanced multitouch sensor that EVO does. That means that developers would be less likely to take advantage of Evo's features. On the other hand, the core of every SGS is the same and that makes everything simple for developers.

When I was at the AT&T store to get my Captivate, the representative told me that AT&T is getting quite a few HTC phones at the end of the Fall. Maybe the Desire is one of them?
