Network Access Question

Hullo all, new Android user here - just got my hands on a Nexus S, and it's been pretty great so far.

Now it may seem excessive, but for the foreseeable future I wasn't certain I could afford a full data plan, so I passed on it, and yet I'm interested in procuring quite a few apps that caught my eye.

Here's the question: given that many of those apps seem to require full Internet access (through the Network Access Permission), will they automatically connect through Wi-Fi (the only Internet option I left enabled), or will they somehow connect to the mobile network (thereby costing me money for data)?

I really don't want any surprise fees on my bill, and if that means not downloading Angry Birds (for example), that's a sacrifice I'll just have to make. ;)

I'm sure that seems a silly question to many, but I haven't quite found the answer anywhere.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Not that I know of. I know on my phone I can turn on/off my data connection that way even if there is an app that gains access via data connection, it won't do it until I turn the connection on. You might want to check for a feature like that on your phone and then you'd have nothing to worry about.

Alright, thanks. I thought that might be the case, but since it cost me nothing to double-check, I figured it was worth it.

Much obliged.

I was in the same situation this summer, out of place with charges in using a data plan. I disabled it but still used all my apps on wifi quite a lot and didn't get any charge. A data stats app like 3g watchdog might help

Just go to menu>settings>wireless & networks>mobile networks and uncheck the box that says data enabled. That way the only way to get data is Wifi.

You should still be able to install apps ect without worries of being charged for Data over a 3G network or 4G network. Like lunatic59 had said just make sure your G network setting is turned off and you should be fine with just using the wireless to get your applications ect that you want.
As far as the free versions of angry birds there are rolling adds in them which in turn my virus scanner had picked up a root kit on surprisingly enough so I just uninstalled all my angry birds stuff. I got all of them from the Market too so I think it was probably tucked within one of the rolling adds that came up at the time as that was when it triggered it.
