Help Network Unlock for Samsung S5

Tippa

Newbie
I've just received a Samsung S5.

It isn't rooted so I was wondering how can I unlock the phone so it is open to all networks?

I would really appreciate it if you could help me.

1st, you don't save how you acquired the S5. If, for example, you received it from a carrier and signed a two year contract with them, it ain't nice to unlock it and then use someone else's SIM card for a different carrier. If you just purchased the phone in the clear without a contract, then you have to buy an unlock code.

Search on eBay or Amazon for unlock codes, there are some vendors who are selling the codes that will unlock the phone. Doing it that way, you won't have to root the phone.

Here is a neat article on the lock codes

You should never have to pay for an unlock code. If the phone is carrier restricted (LOCKED) then you should be able to get the code from the carrier when the contract is satisfied. They usually only give it ti the original owner, however.

Paying for unlock codes is a risky business.

I'm not leaving the company. It is so when I go on holiday I can use a network for local rates. It just makes sense to do that rather than pay rates which are 250% higher per minute.

Are you with AT&T? I have never had a problem with them unlocking a phone for me while still on contract for that exact reason. I travel a bit and use local sims when practical. The catch is, that it's totally up to them. They are not required to do it, but are not prohibited either.

Call them and ask. However, if it is AT&T, then you run the risk of getting someone who either doesn't know the policy, doesn't know how to do it, or doesn't have the authority to make that decision. DO NOT get cranky with them. Be nice, thank them for their help and call back a little later. Eventually you'll get someone who will help. Recently i had a frustrating experience with them and it took me 5 calls before i connected with their twitter service rep @ATTCares. The person called me back and was extremely helpful, so just keep at them. They're not evil or stupid, it's just such a huge organization that it's impossible for one person/department to know everything.
