new charging standards and NFC

i didn't see anything here about this, though i wish i would have, as it is at least tangentially related to the topic at hand, and i only got a little tiny glimpse from G4 AOTS CES 2011. what they said was that cell phones were moving to a new charging standard that would allow you to set your phone down on a surface to charge them. to me, this is great news. i love the idea of phones, and just about any other gadget i could get my hands on, having inductive charging. at this point a 3rd party kit is waaay pricey and not the best fit, litterally, for most phones.

like i said, all i got was the soundbyte from G4s CES coverage. does anyone else know how accurate this is and if so how long it will be before inductive charging is standard?

one of the main reasons i'm wondering is because with NFC now being put into more phones i would absolutely LOVE to look into the possibility of a truely universal dock. one on which you could set your phone onto the surface and the phone(or tablet) would automatically begin to charge as well as connecting to your PC without having any wires. not only would this untangle things a bit, it would eliminate the need for external USB ports which would mean that manufactures could make a more tightly sealed phone(ie waterproof, more durable.). so does anyone have any other info on this rumor?

I haven't heard anything about this but I think it would be amazing! Imagine walking into a SBucks (or something similar) and being able to put your phone on a surface to charge if you need to.... I'm excited

I'm to paranoid to set my phone down in starbucks.

I can't wait until its all wireless can can receive a charge while I'm using it in my hand.

With that said.. this is cool and most definitely interesting.

I'm sure as time goes on there will be multiple ways to charge your phone.

lol.. I really doubt they would get rid of usb anytime soon.

I don't want to have to buy a blutooth dongle just to transfer my music at snail speed to my media playing phone.

or a huge 500+ mb movie.

Blutooth is a marvelous technology I think is great for a short ringtone here or there. and its fun to experiment with..

but, come on.. I can't be the only one who would hate to rely on it for everything.

And at&t I am sure would have a field day.. "lol no blutoothing apps to your phone, it could be dangerous and we are going to treat you like kindergardners!"

we are dealing with more and more wifi devices..

Plus, I am sure I'm not the only one who wants to charge my phone while I am using it :/

Not to mention not have to worry about batteries while I wipe and reinstall movies ect ect..

The more I think about not having a USB plug.. the bigger of a PITA a lot of things sound.

USB sounds more and more like a luxury we are taking for granted the more I think about this.

Well to be honest.. I think even beyond the rooting community there would be enough problems to keep manufacturers from doing it at least for a while.

Imagine being halfway through a file transfer and your batteries getting particularly low.

Or Just wanting to talk to someone over old voice chat while your battery is low.

I'll still text attached to the charger and even play the odd game now while browsing the forums.

You give up a alot that your average customer may "need"/want when you completely remove that USB charger..

this is why i specifically said "external USB". i understand the need for a USB port, but i also think it would be nice if it could be tucked away safely inside the case. im not saying every phone should be like this, but this would be a way of making a waterproof phone. as far as still wanting to have a chord, you could just have an induction tab at the end of a chord to get the same effect. as far as wireless data transfer, i was thinking NFC and not bluetooth. i don't know what the transfer rate is, but if it's decent enough i think it would be pretty cool.

BTW - max data rate for NFC is under 900 kbps, not great, barely faster than Bluetooth, but still not bad.

I'd question how effective things would be for NFC while bathed in a power field, but probably that could be isolated.

I think the idea's intriguing - but to ensure that the phone is within the specified 20 cm to the PC for NFC to work, wouldn't it make sense to have the pad powered by the PC's usb port rather than to have another power cable to clutter up the PC area and to enforce the required proximity?

unless i am mistaken it is simply RFID with a fancy new name. the way everyone who writes about it working is identical to RFID(ie hold it up to x to scan y)

actually, my "idea" about this would be to have a wifi radio connected to the charging pad which would then be wirelessly connected to the PC. i admit this isn't a fully fleshed out idea with all the potential problems addressed, but that's why i ask certain questions, such as the data rate of NFC. that is kind of low and i wonder if it's an inherent cap or if they will be able to increase it in the future.

for the record again, i'm not suggesting to do away with USB ports entirely, nor make them super-difficult to reach. simply to seal them up better than a rubber plug which may pop out when rubbed up against. the easiest way (in my mind) would be to put them under the case. so, reaching them would be no more difficult than accessing your battery/sd card/sim card is now.

going back to the wireless docking for a moment, perhaps it would be better given the data transfer rates to have some sort of wireless docking app that would read that the phone was recieving a charge, then activate the wifi and attempt to dock. in this case the method of charging(inductive or USB) would be moot to the subject barring any interference from the induction field.

so, let me set up a scenario just to highlight the kind of thing that i think this would be good for. for the sake of the scenario, lets say you have a GPS app with locally installed maps so you don't need a signal to use it.

you decide to go on a 4 day canoe trip with a group of friends. of course, you take your phone along because it's not a phone, it's a camera, both video and still, a GPS, a compass, and all sorts of other things. of course it's none of those things if it's sitting in a drybag at the bottom of your boat, and the "spacebag" solution is not only cumbersome(IMO) but the bag coud tear, then you are screwed. so, you have a water-proof phone. after your little trip you come home with all sorts of pics and vids and other goodies you want to put on your computer. so, you go in set your phone down on the charger and it docks to your PC. you go sit down at your PC and begin transferring files from phone to PC. honestly, i would love it if someone could find a way to route calls that way. so say my phone is charging in the other room, wirelessly docked, the CID would pop up on my PC screen and i could either answer or ignore and if i answered, use the PC mic and speakers for the call.

i like it for things like docking my phone, getting info from RFID posters, etc. i won't be using it for financial transactions. too insecure. as i have said many times before, people can use handheld readers to clone credit cards, giving them NFC will only make it so all they have to do is brush up against you to get the same result, as opposed to actually having to physically get hold of your info.
