I have acquired a galaxy s3. It has a bad digitize screen and broken glass.
I believe i can replace those with out any problem. But here is my dilemma.

I would like to back up the info on it before I go any farther. However my pc doesnt see the phone. Is there some special software I have to load on the pc so it will recognize the phone?
 
It sounds like drivers are an issue. You should be able to find Samsung's drivers for your device on their website. Once those are installed, it should recognize it.
 
Samsung had zero downloads for the phone. I read somewhere that it may be locked. But the screen is blank so I dont know??

You acquired this device with a broken glass and a bad digitizer. Which leads me to believe this was not yours?
How do you know it even works??

Zero downloads??? I am unclear on that statement, sorry :(
Locked as in, carrier locked? Lockscreen locked? Again, really sorry I am not following you.
 
Thanks to all that tried to help. Let me clear up a few things. I saw the phone working when it was dropped. So I took a flyer and asked the person if I could have it to play with and try and fix it. So I gambled the 120 for new parts. then I went to you took and found some awesome videos. to help me fix it.
My comment about no downloads was in reply to going to the samsung website and checking for drivers like was suggested. There were no drivers.
Well replacing the digitizer was pretty easy. The phone was locked and I did not have the pin. Thats why the pc did not see it.
However when I did get it running with the pin. the pc see saw it. The phone told me I had to download Kies from the samsung website.
Now all is well. I can back up the dudes music and pics. Then sell this phone.
It was loads of fun.
