Help New email & text notifications always requires you to click it to clear?

Hello

I an S3 (AT&T). I'm currently using the Gmail app for email and the stock messaging app for texts.

When I get a new emails and texts, I get snotifications. If I read my emails directly thru the Gmail app before clicking the notifications, shouldn't the notification disappear?

Meaning I am constantly clicking on email notifications when there are no unread ones.

Same goes for text messages - the notification doesn't disappear when I read the text straight thru the messaging app. I HAVE to click on the notification to have it clear.

Is this standard? Is there away to stop this behavior?

As I remember, these notifications disappeared (after reading in the app) only on ICS and previous versions. May be I am wrong. However soon after sending a text (stock app) if the delivery report comes in, then when you close the app, the notification dissappears.
