New family account - What is the activation process to sell the free feature phones?

SOLVED
Solution: The new phones need to be activated (lines switched to their ESNs) for legal purposes. They can be immediately deactivated (switch lines back to old ESNs) and sold. This answer was given to me from another source and agrees with my expectations. Thank you all!

Original Question
I'm a current Verizon month-to-month customer with 4 lines. I plan on signing up for a new family account to get the Droid X cheap. In looking at the plans, I see that I can get 3 free feature phones for the other lines. The people on those other lines like the phones they have, so I'd like to sell the 3 free feature phones.

I have been told elsewhere that if I do not activate these phones on my account after receiving them, that I will be charged full retail price for them. So, my question is what activation/deactivation process must I go through to not be charged the retail price.

My understanding at this point:
1) Setup account, receive phones
2) Activate the 3 feature phones on my account (If I understand correctly, I change the ESNs for the lines to the new phones' ESNs)
3) Reactivate the old phones on their lines (change back to old ESNs)
4) Have avoided full retail. ESNs are clear on new phones and free to sell on ebay.

If this is right, do I have to keep the new phones activated on the account for a certain period of time (say a day or a week) to ensure that this works, or is it enough that they were activated on the account *at some point*.

Let me know if this is the right idea, or what I can do (if anything) with these free phones besides just keeping them as spares. If I can sell them (and not get charged full retail), that'd be awesome (and seems to make sense from everything I've seen).

I can't wait to get my droid on and try some app programming.

Thanks! =)

Edit: Added that I'm a current Verizon month-to-month customer.

Thanks. I'm with Verizon right now and have been month to month for quite a while now -- biding my time till a phone like the X came out. I should have mentioned that.

I'll bet you'll get specific replies to your question, Droidinite, over at the Verizon forum; I'll move this thread for you to that area.

Just about all of us joined and went straight to the area we had on our mind at joining. "Lounge" sounds like a sort of generic gather place for every issue, but it's more of a "chit chat" group than device or carrier issues.

But Android Forums is vast.. have a look around. ;)

I guess my question really is: How long does a phone have to be active on a line before you can deactivate it without being charged a fee?

Ya know... if you want to be ambitious and make a few bucks, you don't have to just get the free phones. You can upgrade to all smart phones and sell them. I'd rather get $400 for a phone I paid $200 for, than $75 for a phone I got for free :) You're not required to pay for any data plan if the smartphone is not active, so no worries that Verizon will charge you more.

Wow. I wonder if that would fly.

I'm thinking that maybe Verizon doesn't discourage that very much (if they do at all) because most of those devices will end up activated and on contract with Verizon anyway.

Of course it would fly :) Verizon would not try to stop anyone who's selling a new phone, as long as the new contract terms have been accepted, and the contract is for the line, not any features, and data is a feature, so you're not required to pay for it... as long as you don't have a smartphone active on the line of course.

Seems to me you would be screwing the other lines out of being able to get a new phone when they're able to. You would be locking them into a new 2 year contract with an ETF attached til contract expiration. Unless one of those lines the Primary lines then they won't be able to upgrade @ upgrade pricing until the 20th month.

They might like their phones now, but phones can get lost, be stolen, or just plain break down, they might decide in 2 months they want a new phone and will have to pay full price for a new one.
