I'm using Sunrise Calendar, its terrific!Another option is to use an alternate calendar app. The AOSP calendar app should be very similar to the Google Calendar app (version that you prefer). Of you can find and install that, and remove/disable Google Calendar you should not get any prompts to update.

I'm not a fan of the new look either, though I'm trying to give it a chance to grow on me. My biggest gripe is the lack of a "week" display on my phone - it only shows 5 days, but on my tablet it shows 7 days. A close runner up for biggest gripe is the cartoonish/childish look of the new UI. My phone is primarily a business tool; the new UI makes me feel like I've borrowed a toy from a 4-year-old.
After enabling the AOSP calendar app on my Moto X I was able to compare the old week view to the 5-day view, and indeed the week view shows no title information in some cases, where the 5-day view shows something. That something is difficult to read since it wraps words longer than a few characters over multiple lines. While I agree that the lack of a "week" option is annoying (it will show up if you go to landscape mode, btw... 5-day mode is when you are in portrait) I think they chose that because they recognized that it was darn near impossible to see actual event titles when in portrait week view, and only showing 5 days allows for a little more information to be displayed for each event at the expense of overall information.
