New Google Calendar format

Following a recent Google Calendar update, some bright spark seems to have decided to 'improve' the display format. I do not like it! Is there any way to revert to the previous format or will it be necessary to download an independent app?

Thanks for your help.

Well no-one seems able to help me, so I did a bit of investigating.

I found that if I click Settings/Apps/Calendar, then click Uninstall Updates, the new calendar (that looks like it was designed by a primary school child with crayons!) is gone, and replaced by the far superior original format.

Hope this might be useful for other people similarly afflicted!

I'd give myself a Kudos vote, if such things were available on this forum!

I'm not a fan of the new look either, though I'm trying to give it a chance to grow on me. My biggest gripe is the lack of a "week" display on my phone - it only shows 5 days, but on my tablet it shows 7 days. A close runner up for biggest gripe is the cartoonish/childish look of the new UI. My phone is primarily a business tool; the new UI makes me feel like I've borrowed a toy from a 4-year-old.

Yes, all OK now (see my last post), but now Google keeps asking me to update the app again. No thanks!

Another option is to use an alternate calendar app. The AOSP calendar app should be very similar to the Google Calendar app (version that you prefer). Of you can find and install that, and remove/disable Google Calendar you should not get any prompts to update.

While I agree that the lack of a "week" option is annoying (it will show up if you go to landscape mode, btw... 5-day mode is when you are in portrait) I think they chose that because they recognized that it was darn near impossible to see actual event titles when in portrait week view, and only showing 5 days allows for a little more information to be displayed for each event at the expense of overall information.

After enabling the AOSP calendar app on my Moto X I was able to compare the old week view to the 5-day view, and indeed the week view shows no title information in some cases, where the 5-day view shows something. That something is difficult to read since it wraps words longer than a few characters over multiple lines.

The new look is growing on me though.

I use Jorte calendar widget. Can show all the different time periods like day, week, month and allows quite a bit of creativity when it comes to the colors used for the display of the calendar. One thing though, if you install Jorte be sure that you do not sync to the Jorte Cloud. I caught that when I first got the app and chose Gmail instead.

Hope you find something to your liking.

Great link! They must be getting the message that there's an unusually high dislike of the new format. With as many new things that come out of Google, some are bound to be duds.
