new here and need help choosing a phone

Hi, I'm Stan. I live in Massachusetts. I am trying to choose a new phone. my first smartphone. I am interested in the android over the I-Phone due to my need for gmail and googles calender to synch with my PC.

I am a bit afraid of all the battery issues I have read in the reviews. So, how can I maximize my battery life with one of these phones? also, I am considering the Droid4, or the Droid Razr. Are they good phones? Or is something like the HTC rezound better? I really need input here.

as far as usage goes, I'll use the email, calender and a few apps but most likely will not always be on the phone.
