new message not opening first on s7

When I receive a new text message and then open messaging, the new message doesn't open. It goes to the last conversation that I had open before the new message arrived. WHY? It is super annoying. I have sent replies to the wrong person so many times because of this. I think I'm going to reply to the person who sent the new message, but I'm writing to the person in the last conversation.

Is there any way to fix this on my s7? Thanks

I'm assuming your pressing the home button to exit the messaging app. The home button means that put the app in background as is. So if you press it while inside another thread, when you open messages, it will go back to where you left of. You should exit properly using the back button. Or pull down the notification shade and press the alert to go to the message directly.
