New Nexus..

So I had to replace my nexus -- old one got blacklisted imei :(

Anyways my original N5 pulled amazing battery life and now its gone. So I got a new one through my carrier subsidized for 49.99 on a 2 year term (I figured I liked the phone enough that I can keep it for 2 years - but I doubt that will happen).

Anyways I've had the new phone for 4 days now - today being the first one at work.. This morning after 3 hours and 45 minutes I had dropped 40% with only 50 minutes screen on... I've done the usual (auto brightness, 30 second screen off, adjusted the settings in facebook and Google account to only refresh when i use them, and I installed batteryguru) after reading a bit I disabled background data on all my third party apps...

Wondering what else is recommended to pull better life from the battery.

The stock rom/kernel combination is pretty horrible as far as efficiency goes. I've pulled amazing battery life on my device using a combination of Cataclysm stable from back in December, Faux Kernel using FauxClock app having it set to intellidemand using the intelliplug driver on the app. I can usually go about a week without charging if I barely use the device, or get average roughly 5.5-6 hours of screen if using it heavy.

erm, turned off google location reporting and put location mode in battery saving?

How important is Google Location Reporting? The only thing I use regularly and feel might be affected if I turn it off is Google Maps, although I can quickly change this from 'Battery Saving' to 'High Accuracy' if necessary.
Is this still effective if I turn off Google Location Reporting?

Google maps works just fine with google location reporting turned off, even when using navigation.

From what I can tell, location reporting is mainly for Google Now and for android device manager if you wanna locate your phone etc. Maybe someone else can chip in with what else it's useful for?

Also, what made a BIG diff for me was wifi. Just because you do not have wifi turned on.............ha ha.........................go to the 3 dots, advanced and make sure the "scanning always available" is un-ticked. What it does is constantly scan for wifi networks even though you have wifi shut off. This setting used a lot of battery on my handset.

It shows you on a map where you have been on a particular day. (Google account then data tools (I think) then location history)

Battery looking WAAAAY better today after some tweaking and turning off background data.

However what do orange bars on the pull down menu mean?

Normally they are white...

I have everything switched on basically but i find my battery usage can vary a helluva lot from day to day. Some days i use hardly any and other days almost run out.I guess most of this is down to the area i'm in, I.E. signal quality.

I think you are correct. It seems the days my battery does not last are the same days my buddies battery does the same thing, He has a Samsung S3.
I think it has a lot to do with AT&T which we are both on.

Good point. On the pull-down Settings page, the 'buttons' for my Wi-Fi connection and my 3G connection have recently turned orange (from white). Nothing appears to be different otherwise, but I'd be interested to find out why this happened.

From the Nexus 5 User's guide (Page 16):

In Quick Settings only, white bars in the Wi-Fi or
mobile signal indicators indicate the signal strength
of a normal Internet connection, while orange bars
indicate that some web services may not be functioning
normally. For example, sometimes the mobile signal bars
turn orange briefly when you turn on your device, until a
full connection is established.

Mine are steady orange

That's odd, but if things seem to be working, I wouldn't worry about it. You will notice they are somewhat vague on what it indicates. Could be anything from a weak signal to a particular Google services server slowing down because of hits. I've never paid that much attention to even the old "how many bars" indicators. If my call goes through, the email arrives or the web page opens, who cares. ;)

Thank you. That's very interesting but, from the user guide:

"If you have a signal but no Internet connection, the bars indicating the strength of the Wi-Fi or mobile signal turn orange".

The thing is that I do have an internet connection. All I can assume is that I have turned off some option or other, possibly to do with an unconnected app.

Still, as you then said, perhaps I shouldn't worry too much about it if things are working OK!

I don't know what happened to cause the change, but I've just turned off the phone (completely) and turned on again to find the Wi-Fi and mobile signal buttons are white again.

It seems to work for other things too. My long experience with computers has taught me that if it's not working properly turn it off and on again!

Sorry to prolong this further but, on turning my phone on again this morning (after being on standby overnight) the buttons are orange again! I can still access the internet on my home Wi-Fi, though, so no real problems.
I'd just be interested to discover what I've done to make them change to orange.
