New phone and update

As of Friday I am a new Samsung girl. So I bought the s4 and there is an update. I'm a bit scared to update it as it might be totally different or slow my phone down . What is the update about and did it slow the phone down

Assuming you bought a new Galaxy S4, the update is probably for Android 5 Lollipop.

It does look different and shouldn't slow down the phone.
 
Check out the phone and carrier forums here for discussions of your exact version S4 (there are many). Chances are if there are any known issues with the particular update you are being offered there will be info posted about it.
