New phone help

zaxos

Newbie
I haven't had to look for a new phone since I bought my T-mobile G2... unfortunately my G2's screen died and I find myself looking for a new phone now. I usually prefer vanilla android, but am willing to flirt with other versions if recommended. I seek help because I want to find a phone with longevity, and one with nice enough hardware to keep it speedy. I am willing to wait a little if it means getting the better phone. If you guys have any good phone recommendations (for t-mobile or unlocked) that would be fantastic. I am not sure if this is the right place to post this, but again I appreciate the help!

I have moved your post to the T-Mobile section as the others who post here can give you better insight on what works great with T-Mobile, good luck to you, and i hope you get the phone you really want

If you are willing to do a two year contract, Best Buy has the HTC One S for $149.
Awesome phone

I just bought a phone for T-Mobile and bought a two month old S II for $325.

For my purposes, the following were of value to me on the S II vs. the One S

1. microSDHC
2. removable battery
3. more radios for compatibility
4. NFC (even if I don't know there is a current use for it)
5. massive sales equals best hack/ROM support

The One S has a bit better CPU and screen, but the above outweigh those advantages to me, especially since they are cheaper and more plentiful than the One S (on the used market). If you already have one, get another, and then you have spare parts...no brainer in my book...

The SD and removable battery are going to hurt HTC on sales. They are a decision maker for many. Still thinking I will get it though

I don't know that the extra resolution is that big of a deal, or the CPU. I think the other decision is whether you want a stock vs. HTC Sense experience. I have both, but prefer a native experience I can more easily modify, which brings me back to the Samsung.

Awesome phone

We all have a different mix of needs, minutes, text, or data....by mixing and matching you can get the deal you want usually.

I was considering the traditional Classic Unlimited plus which is $70 for unlimited talk, text, and data, but you lose 4G at 2GB.

I am currently on a 300 minute plan and have only ran over once. That means I don't care about the minutes, but want more data.

The Wally World $30 plan is only 100 minutes, but is unlimited text and 4G data to 5GB. If I use 200 minutes and pay .10 a min, that is $20 which is $50, and I have a 300 min plan with 5GB of 4G data. When I don't use 300, which is typical, I pay less. Since there is no contract, I buy the phone I want and pay $30, or more if I need to, and still get unlimited text.

If you want 5GB on a Classic plan, you have to go Premium for $85/mon. If you need unlimited minutes, that might work for you...

BTW, you can get plans that start with 0GB up to 10GB. It works out that they get $5/GB, so you can buy increments of 2, 5, or 10GB for $5/GB.

Some people are OK backing down to 3G once they use up their 200MB or 2GB, depending on their plan. I am sure there are those using all their 5GB and more.

For the couple of places where I don't get a signal (visiting my parents, or some friends that live in BFE), the included wifi calling in the One S is awesome. I know you can do wifi calling with apps and all that, but for a lot of people it is a great option. It also has great battery life. I would keep that in your options anyway (sense 4.0 isn't so bad). If you are okay with using cloud storage (for music/media) I would recommend it.

You can buy unlocked Galaxy Nexus phones that will work on either AT&T or T-Mobile for $399 directly from the Google Play store. They are also including a free $10 credit for Google Wallet so if you think about it you are actually paying $389. This might be a good choice for you if you don't want to extend your contract for another 2 years.
