New phone, migration recommendations

Hi
I am migrating from a S4 to an S8. Do you have recommendations for this process? I know there are some apps that helps migrating contacts (any recommendations btw?). I guess when it comes to apps, I will have to install one by one?

Smart switch did it... well, it came with the device and instructions in the box of my new device. It allowed me to transfer text messages, pictures, music, and my apps, even my own made ones which I was surprised. You have the option to do the transfer via WiFi or usb cable. I did it using the latter. I had a glitch in the transfer because I forgot to disable the sleep mode in both phones. After that, my Samsung s8 was having trouble downloading the data, as the download process keep restarting at about 40%. Problem was solved by unplugging the cable and restarting the app in both devices. Notice that the old device had the microUSB connector, and the new device had the USB type A coupled to the adapter that came in the box (converts type A USB into Type C). This is the proper way to connect them if you are moving data into your S8.

For whatsapp, you only have one shot. That is, before you run whatsapp in your new device, make sure you backup your account in your old device. Then, when you start whatsapp in your new device, it will allow you to sync all your messages after you verify the number in your new phone. In my old phone, whatsapp was sync once a week, so I lost about one week of data.

For my stickyNotes, I used dropbox, an option from my app.

For calendars, it was a bit trickier. You cannot syn calendars using smart switch. Instead, you need to sync to your email account (I was using a gmail one) in the old device and then sync within my new device. This link might help: https://calendar.google.com/calendar/syncselect

For apps, unfortunately it does not transfer any saved data. I believe for some of the apps, Smart Switch install them directly from the app store. For my home made ones, it moved associated data (res folder). For other apps that use custom Android storage options (a public folder, for instance), then this data is not transferred.

Accounts with money values can be transferred by login into their provided sites.

I hope this helps other ppl.
