Root New phone, root now?

Hi, I'm new here. I had a Droid 1 but just got a Droid Razr Maxx. I've had my Droid 1 for several years and it was rooted. I love cyanogen mod, the customizations, Titanium Backup, etc. My question is... Should I immediately root my new phone (the Droid Razr Maxx) or should I wait a little bit? Is it better to root before you get all your customizations in? Root now or later?

First you need to look into the available ROMs and see if any provide you features you don't already have with ICS. Also how well those ROMs are working.

i can tell you now, all cyanogen9, cyanogen10, and aokp custom roms are all unstable. they lack mms and bluetooth support in most cases and an unstable data connection.
however most of the home brew customs that were built off of stock are very safe. Like my own custom rom (Bionx Nx) is very stable and built off of the stock rom so no problems you need to worry about. but if your venteruos and know how to maintain your backups and factory reflash your razr if need be, by all means, take a run on the cyanogen roms.

you can find a whole slew of custom roms and support at droidrzr. com you can also find me over there as well bud.

Go for it. The fact of being able to use titanium is reason enough to root. All the other stuff is just other benefits.

The first day I got my nexus I rooted and unlocked it before I even set up my Google account and when they gave me a maxx for my GNEX I rooted it as soon as ivoprnrd it also

Thanks guys for your advice. I'm going to root now instead of waiting later. Which guide is the best? I've found several online. Is there a guide to the different ROMS? I don't know if I'll flash a ROM because of things I've read on the forums... Do you have a ROM flashed?

I know, I'm stupid. But I'm confused with that link. After the "First Steps", do I follow the steps under "Utility"? I'm confused with step number 1 because it says that step is for unrooting your phone. Do I just skip this?

It says:

1) If you ever brick your phone, or need to ship it back to Verizon, you will need to do this option. This will remove root, and put your phone back to the way it was when you first took it out of its pretty black box. To do this option, you will have to put your phone into AP Fastboot mode. It sounds scary, but it is not. AP Fastboot is the stock recovery program that is built deep inside by Motorola. Turn off your phone.

Press and hold the following buttons at the same time until the screen turns on
1. volume down
2.volume up
3.power

Press Volume down until you reach the AP fastboot in the list
Press Volume up to select.

I'm confused with his steps. I'm nervous I'll brick my phone, so I'm sorry if I'm being a dunce. Am I supposed to have Safestrap installed before I start rooting?

So am I supposed to still do this:

Press and hold the following buttons at the same time until the screen turns on
1. volume down
2.volume up
3.power

Press Volume down until you reach the AP fastboot in the list
Press Volume up to select.

And what does this mean?:

3) Just an app to keep your root if you ever get pushed an update from Verizon.

6) Official kernel
7) Leaked Kernel

Just follow the instructions on the utility... It tells you exactly how to root.
Download the utility, hit number 2, plug your phone in.
You're not gonna brick by rooting. And the option 1 will fix it even if you do.

Safestrap is only for flashing roms, which I'm not sure you're ready for yet.

Oh I was going to flash Artic HD. I was going to read more about flashing before I do it though. Back when I had my Droid 1, I used ROM manager to flash cyanogen mod, but I guess that's not what I should do here.

Yeah you can't use rom manager became there is no official recovery for our phones.

Just read through that guide it tells you everything you need to know for each step.

You only have to use the ones that pertain to what you are doing. The guide lists each option in the utility and but you don't have to do it step by step. For example if you just want to root, you would look at option 2 and read what is says to do which is basically just plugging your phone in and following the on screen instructions on the utility.

Safestrap is used for flashing roms you don't need to have it for anything else. You cant install it until you are rooted so that will be the last step. Just make sure you don't install it with the utility as it is out dated, instead use the link to Hashcode downloads that I put in there.

Make sure you read the safestrap and rom flashing sections over multiple times until you are sure you know what you're doing as safestrap can be kind of confusing at sometimes.

Also make sure to read the directions for whatever rom you are flashing to be sure you are doing all the necessary wipes and reboots.

When I first got my Razr Maxx, it automatically uploaded all my apps I had on my Droid 1, including all of the root apps. Is it okay to have them on the phone if my phone isn't rooted yet? Should I delete them until I root my phone?

Okay so I tried using Matt's Utility and it didn't work. When I pressed enter to start, I keep getting "adb is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file" EDIT to say: Nevermind I found the problem. I moved the bat file outside of the folder. Problem solved. Now I'm rooted! ROM is next.
