New phone without upgrade? (Verizon)

My current phone which is an HTC Incredible 2 has been giving me problems. It sends random message drafts to people in my contacts, drops calls, and locks up frequently. I've been through a few of them.
I went into Verizon to see if I can just buy a new phone, maybe an early upgrade, but to no avail. My upgrade date is in May 2013 and they tell me that the only way I can get a new phone (I really want the Maxx HD) is to pay $650!
I've looked online through sites such as eBay and Amazon, but the prices are still very high.
Are there any ways around this?

Not that i know of. Terminating your contract is pricy, as you said $650 is probably the amount for terminating it, though i dont see how its $650. Thats almost the phone itself. Are you positive $650 is the termination fee, or is that the fee + new phone + new 2 year contract?

If you dont use 4G, i would suggest to you the new Nexus 4 for $300, no contract.

Otherwise there is no way around this sadly, and i am stuck with my phone under like September of 2013 haha.

I would suggest buying used if anything from here or Amazon maybe.

EDIT: to the person above me 650$ is the price to buy the MAXX flat rate, since he doesn't have an upgrade he can't get it at a reduced price.

Are you on a family plan? You could play the add-a-line game which would be the equivalent of buying at reduced price on ebay without the worries of where your phone came from, and it allows you to spread the cost. I'm thinking of doing this for my wife simply to not have to change her data plan.
