New "Places" - replaces "Places Directory"?

I just got the Google Map update, and I notice it came with a new app: "Places".

It looks different, but seems function the same as Places Directory. Does anyone know if this is meant to replace Places Directory? Should I just uninstall the old app?

I want to say that "Places" indeed replaces the "Places Directory" app because when I installed Google Maps 4.4, I couldn't see the "Places" icon until I uninstalled "Places Directory" and rebooted my phone. Even if it doesn't officially replace it, I believe that "Places" will better integrate with your phone being that it's by Google. Just my 2 cents.

Places Directory is a google app as well.

But, it does look like Places better integrates with Maps.

I think Places still has a little work though to catch Places Directory.

Very confusing. They should have just linked places directory to maps or beefed up places and auto-uninstalled places directory with the new maps release.

for me places directory app was a lot better than the google places app..the non google app showed more places than the google one..

well for some reason one is working better than the other one..i should also note that im ankara, turkey so im never going to get awesome results but still..

I suspect that the new Places app was created by the Maps team and the Google Places Directory was created by another team. Places Directory certainly has the upper hand at the moment but I would expect the Maps team to continue development here on in.

Is there a special setting to allow Places to make calls? When I select a place and bring up the details, the phone icon is greyed out...

I was wondering this also. And is there a way to add an address and then use Places? It only seems to work based on current location.

It's possible on the Places Directory app, which is parallel to Places. The menu from the home screen of that allows you to pick a location - much more useful.
