New problem transferring photos from phone to PC

My One mini has recently stopped allowing me to transfer photos from the phone to my windows 8 PC. It has worked fine for 4 months but now all I get is a constantly flashing notice (twice a second) in the notification window at the top of the phone that says Media device (MTP) connected.

If I open file explorer on the PC I can see the F drive (HTC) momentarily appear then disappear every half second.

Can anyone shed any light on what may have gone wrong. Thanks.

sounds like a dirty usb port or a bad usb cable
try blowing out the port on the phone with compressed air. check the cable for cracks or bulges near the connectors

Thanks I tried this and a new cable but no different. Could it be a missing driver? Also, I have tried switching on USB tethering but no different. I seem to remember having to go into settings,Apps, All, then activating one of the apps on to enable phone to appear as a drive on PC when I first got the phone but now I can't find that same app - maybe it got deleted - any more ideas, thanks.
