Help New to Android - How to transfer music from pc to Note 8

rshatzy

Lurker
I am brand new Android user coming from iOS. I am trying to transfer my music from my computer to the Note 8. I want to keep the file format as apple lossless. My library is rather large and I don't wish to use a cloud service for uploading and downloading as this would be tedious due to storage limitations in the cloud. With my iphone I simply plugged in my phone to a computer running itunes. I could select the type of compression if any and simply transfer my library to my phone. I have contacted Samsung and they where of absolute no help. Is there a way to do this? It is kind of a big deal for me since I don't use any streaming service for music. I want my music on my phone and preferably in lossless format. I hope there is a reasonable solution to this because I don't want to get the iphone 8 (outdated design) and I don't want to fork over 1k for the iphone X. I got the note for 750. Thanks.

expect to have some hurdles to jump over when making such a change.

you are moving betwixt two entirely different operating systems, so don't expect this to be a breeze. They are not designed to work together and have their own ecosystems.

there is a vast amount of data on the interwebs on how to do this. ill help with a quick 5 second internet search.

This is actually not an issue between iOS and Android. My music is on a windows 10 machine separate from iTunes. I simply want to put those files on the note 8 and play them in the lossless file format. Most of my music uses Apple Lossless codec. I have that Android supports this while others say it does not. Is there a way to play my music that is stored on the note 8 as Apple Lossless with google play app?

FYI the only things that can play the proprietary Apple Lossless format is Apple hardware, and their software like iTunes. Android supports FLAC, which is also lossless, and can be played on anything. I think there are third-party converters available.

Well basically to get the files into the phone, you can just copy paste. The problem would come in the form of the playlists. There are a few programs that allow you to sync playlists with iTunes and Android but I do not know if they will support transfer of Apple lossless. Then you will have to find an app that supports Apple lossless. I don't know for sure of an app that explicitly does, but you can try Poweramp.

An option to sync playslist is to get another player on your PC that supports both ALAC and Android. AFAIK Musicbee(freeware) can support ALAC and it can sync playlists to Android (I used this before going to Spotify).

Edit: found on another forum in a post from 2014 that Poweramp does play Apple Lossless m4a.

This is actually not an issue between iOS and Android.

you can get the files on your android device but you can't natively play them in "apple lossless" format you desire directly from the device, so at the core this is an issue between apple and android.

can you install the itunes app directly to the note 8 and have it work? no.

the issue is the DRM on the files.

what you will need to do is re-encode the files using a 3rd party audio app into an .mp4 wrapper, which is a little easier on audio files.

bottom line: you are going to have to transcode the files to a format that is playable on android. there's a reason apple locks down their audio files through itunes.

smoke this over:

https://drm-wizard.com/bypass-itunes-drm-and-convert-itunes-songs-to-android-phone.html

there it mentions burning your apple DRM content to CD, the re-ripping that into another format android can play.

Good news is none of my music has DRM. I never bought a single song off of iTunes. A lot of my music comes from digital downloads after buying the vinyl record. The solution I have found best so far is to copy and paste the files into the note's music folder. I downloaded the legendary VLC player. I was happy to see it on the Play store. So far it's not bad. It plays ALAC no problem. The interface is pretty minimal which I have no gripe about really. I will continue trying this method and see how it works out for me. Now I need to find a proper phone app with a visual voicemail. I can't believe that's not included in the note 8. Glad I found this forum and thanks for the suggestions.

I was frustrated that visual voicemail wasn't included on my unlocked Note 8, too, but Google Voice works great.

Transfer of files.

I've used exclusively Macs since 1983. Interaction between Apple computers and Android is as bad as it once was between DOS or Windoze machines with Macs. Who here remembers 'Apple file transfer'? This was back when Macs wouldn't read/write PeeCee disks.

Android file transfer is even clunkier but does work. Occasionally it will choke and stop copying an entire folder because it doesn't like a character in a file name or something.

There is a foolproof way I use to move files to and from an Android device and a Mac in two stages. This is because all my music stuff is held as .mp3 files.

So to move any files of any sort you need a FAT formatted USB flash drive. You plug it into the Android using an OTG cable or more simply a small OTG converter [pic]. And 'as is' into the Mac. Copy it onto the flash drive as an intermediary.

Works on any file including music files. .jpgs .png .wav .flv .mp4 and address book export files (.vcf) all work fine. For some reason I have always had problems getting those last ones to email.

The best thing to do is to install Google Play Music on your computer. Once installed, it will ask you if you want to upload the music on your pc into your Google Play Music storage (you get 50,000 songs free).

This way, your music is downloadable from there, and you will have our music stored anywhere you can access Google Play Music

Just connect your phone to the PC, then drag & and drop your music into the Music folder on your phone. Easy. Google Play Music is great - as long as you have access to the internet. If you're prone to going to dead zones, though, a local library is unbeatable.

It's a bit flakey with a Mac. (I have only ever used Macs.) The file transfer program falls over a fair bit.

But on Mac OS reliably and for any size or number of files:
1) Copy your music files to USB stick (NOT native Mac OS formatted).
2) using an OTG adaptor (I think your Samsung includes one) connect the USB stick to the phone. Copy the files across. The 'My Files' app works for that just fine.

It's a two stage process but in the end a lot quicker than using any cloud or on line method and it's solid compared to the file exhange thing.

You can also do it the other way, obviously but in addition, you can back your Samsung up onto a USB stick and then keep a copy of that backup on your computer or external drive.
