New to Samsung

Hi all:
I am new to Samsung having had an iPhone since the 4. Last one was the 5s.
My daughter talked me into the Note 5 and I do like the size of the phone. Although massive against the 5s it is not too heavy and the larger screen is great.
I am now looking at all the things is can do and perhaps I should do.
I am assuming that "rooting" is the same as "jailbreaking" an iphone? If so are they any great advantages to rooting? Also, is there an effect on the warranty?
So much seems to run in the background that I am not a fan of. I pretty much kept my iPhone locked down on all background procedures until needed.
Any assistance that can be offered on keeping running processes to a minimum is appreciated!

Rooting is one of those things that gets talked about in forums.. And so anyone coming fresh to the forum thinks it's something they need to do.

Android gives the user a lot more freedom than iOS. So a lot of the things that you might have needed to jailbreak your iOS device to do are available to you on Android already.

Rooting gives you the ability to do some things on your device, but does come at a cost. Certain apps may refuse to run... And because you are allowed to do anything if your rooted you can also break things and make life difficult for yourself.


At this stage in your Android journey, I don't think it's something you need to do (or worry about). There's plenty of fun and discoveries to make without doing that.

When you've used it a while and (if you ever do) find a reason why you need to root it, then its something to look at.

But probably not today.

Rooting can also brick your phone and in most cases can void your warranty. The Note 5 already has one of the fastest processors available. Make sure you research an app before installing it. Some have tons of adware in them. If you really want to experiment with rooting do as I did. I had an old smart phone laying around that was already months out of warranty and I watched a lot of youtube videos. I had an old Samsung Galaxy S3 running Kit Kat. I rooted it and installed cyanogen mod 13 on it so now it runs Marshmallow. If you can do all that without bricking your phone confidently then you might be ready to root your daily user.

Use an app called Package Disabler/Debloater to stop all that background crap from running but please be careful what you stop because this app doesn't require root access and if you stop something that you shouldn't you'll end up having to hard reset the phone and start all over again! Just search the app you want to stop before stopping it.
