new to smartphones, steep learning curve

The new-to-me Droid 2 is my first smartphone. It is a steep learning curve from zero so I really appreciate the knowledge on these forums.

The D2 has the basics I required (voice, Swype) and it was inexpensive if I brick it while learning.

First thing to learn is the basic care and feeding - how to keep the apps updated, minimizing data usage and extending battery life.

How do I find what updates are available for the phone and apps? any thread, site, or sticky post on the subject?
