My 2 year contract is coming up with Verizon and I am interested in the Droid Eris. I play with my friends Iphone and enjoy the fact that the Eris can duplicate it especially with the apps. But I'm a little worried because I dont want to pay the $30 per month. I dont need unlimited internet on my phone, I wont use it that excessively and I dont need the unlimited email either. Do I need the $30 per month plan, or can I enjoy all the benefits of a smart phone with limitations, at a cheaper price? Someone told me it is a mandatory deal just like with the Iphone.
 
used to be you could get the pay as you go and then block the data and just use wifi but all the major carriers have eliminated that plan and force you to use the $30/month data plan on top of your voice plan.
If you get any employer discount that does apply to the data plan.
The makers have forgotten about the small segement of people like me that just want a pda that can make calls to eliminate carrying a cell phone and pda and force that pda that can make calls to have a data plan as well.
 
Unfortunately Verizon does force the use of a data plan on their Android phones, and I believe the $30 plan is the only (or cheapest) one offered. Back when I had a Moto Q, I was able to use that phone without a data plan. I don't know if that still applies to their Windows Mobile phones, but I can't in good conscience recommend you buy a Windows Mobile Phone.
 
You could never get the q without a data plan, you just had to get pay as you go then never use it and therefore never get charged. There were a lot of people that just called that 'no data plan' even though it was a data plan. sort of like the people that call usb flash drives memory sticks so you mother in law goes in the computer store and buys a sony memory stick instead of a flash drive because thats the package that said memory stick. So some sales people when asked for no data plan would just put you on the pay as you go rather than trying to explain it.
I still have my Q and wouldn't recommend it either, the phone its self is nice and if it could run Android (its cpu isn't currently supported by Android) I would have kept it but Windows Mobile was really a big disappointment. Supposedly its still grandfathered in so it could go on the pay as you go data plan.
 
The data plan is mandatory. I would get the phone and try it out for 30 days. See if the pros outweigh the cons. price/cool factor. If on the 29th day you just can't stomach paying the 30 bucks, then cancel and no harm done.
 
Worth is always subjective. The data plan is completely worth having for my Droid IMO. I can't tell you if you think it will be worth it or not. Your best bet, as posted above, is to take it for a spin and decide before your time is up to return it.
