new to smartphones

Hi All,

I'm new to smartphones, but have been in IT for more than 30 years. Had an old flip phone with basic voice/text and due to black friday, I got a LG Optimus II Deluxe for $19.99 (wireless carrier is Net10) and got a Lexar microSDHC (16GB) card for $6.99.

I will probably be activating this on Mon/Tues (December 1/2), and have a few questions (don't laugh please) :)

Do I need to format the microSDHC card or will it work when installed in the LG39C?

I have about 10GB of music (mp3/m4a) to transfer from Windows XP to the LG39C (which comes with a USB cable), what is the easiest method to go about this (I've bookmarked some google stuff) and found a link from google play for a nice free music player which supports m4a.

I plan on using the phone for voice, email, occasional web surfing, etc (I'm going to use the unlimited talk/text/data plan at 30 day rate), and could someone recommend a good set of basic apps to install to augment the apps which are supplied with the LG39C?

It is running Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) I believe and the phone does not have a SIM card installed, and I've seen some stuff about Cyanomodgen, but don't believe it is available for this model of phone (as of yet).

Sorry to sound like such a newbie, but moving to the modern world of smartphone is a bit daunting...

Well it really depends on your use. If you like to tinker and there's a root method and development support for your device then I'd recommend rootexplorer (paid app), greenify, Textra (excellent option for SMS/MMS over hangouts/messenger.) Tapatalk for all your forums. Really, again it just depends on how you plan to use your phone. :D

Hi

You should be able to format the sd card in your phone.

To transfer the music, I would get a usb sdcard reader to plug into your XP pc and copy the files directly to the sdcard which will be in your phone.

Cyanogenmod is an alternative operating system which could be installed if you root (hack) your phone. From what you have said that may be a while in the future!

A really good file manager app is ES File manager (free in playstore). Realcalc is a good scientific calculator. Google gesture search is good for finding things on your phone. For storage, dropbox, drive, box, mega, copy etc. Yes, textra for SMS. Business Calendar for a good calendar app.

There is a very large choice! Ask again with specific requests for types of app!

I am moving this post to get a wider audience.

Roger
