Help Newbie having to power up after sleep

Got my Nexus 32 g and most things going ok, but having difficulty when screen goes black and then I briefly press power button, most times that takes me back to my open program after pressing lock icon and dragging it down and I continue on. Seems to happen more often with my Aldiko book reader but happens on other occasions with other programs when Nexus seems to go to sleep. The more frustrating times are when it reopens and it briefly shows program I was using and that disappears and the only way I can move forward is I have to do a full power down and restart and everything is ok as usual method of dragging lock in circle down doesn't open anything . What am I missing to change this...thanks garr

It could be Aldiko still running in the background thats causing it, try closing it down

Try taking the screen lock off to see if it makes a difference.
I prefer not to use one as I like the fact it wakes up when I open the cover, not that secure I know but I dont have anything private on it
