Help Newbie help with contacts list

I am not well versed with google back-up, clouds, etc., and my wife is worse. Hope somebody will step me through a solution.
Just changed carriers and upgraded S3 to S5. When my wife first turned on her new phone, her contacts populated right away. However, the list wasn't the current one that was on the S3. I think she somehow disabled sync with Google some time ago, and some old version of the list was installed.
Now I hope somebody will lead me through: removing the bogus contacts list on the new S5, installing the correct list from the old S3 (it has wifi connection), getting the correct list to upload to Google and Facebook without just duplicating and doubling up any list in those accounts.
I've read some threads that talk about portions of the process, but they assume the reader is better versed, and the threads I've found don't address all that I'm asking. Anybody willing to help?

Well, firstly make sure that you turn the sync over the S3 onto on position if you are not seeing the newer contacts means over your S3 contacts still needs to be synchronised so the trick is first make changes over the S3 and sync once done then out the Google account over to the new device i.e. S5 and all your contact will populate accordingly. Or I would say the better option will be installing some backup apps like CMW app over the PlayStore over your S3 backup the data and do install the same app over the S5 login over it and done ! Now you can use it to backup all the data stored over the cloud servers over to your S5 !

I did backup and used a merge program. Not perfect - still had to manually remove duplicates, and not all photos appeared - but much better.
I appreciate the help
