Newbie needs advice

I'm new to the forum. I know very little about phones. So hopefully someone can answer questions.
At the first of the year I got my first smartphone, an optimus S. I'm locked into the plan through my work and couldn't go to the 4g because it cost more per month.
So, my questions is, can I buy an unlocked EVO on my own and have it work without upgrading plans? If I do this, will it only work in 3g? If I did buy the EVO, what do I need to do to switch to it? ...... Is it just a matter of switching sim cards?

Thanks for any advice!

No sim cards on Sprint, to switch a phone, Call Sprint and they will ask for the electronic serial number of the phone and switch it for you. This can be done online too, I belived.

EVO opperates on 3G and 4G only. No way to activate it with just one of the two. All or nothing.

So, I think you are saying even if I buy an unlocked phone, I still must go through Sprint, and I still must upgrade my plan. There is no way around it, right??

No way to get the EVO without adding the 10 dollar a month fee, that I do know. And to activate the phone, you must call Sprint, or do it yourself online. (I am pretty sure it can still be done online via your Sprint online account, but havent done it in a while.)

buy the way...

all smartphones now have the added $10 month fee.
you are grandfathered in.. but if you ever change phones... it will be added!

There ya go, just tell your employer that Sprint is charging 10 bucks for all SmartPhones now. It's (mostly) true. :) Now go get that new phone you want! ..or get one of the new ones on the way. Stretching the truth never hurt anyone. ;)
