Newbie Qestions:Rooting

Hello, I'm a new Droid user (a few hours), and am fresh off the Apple bandwagon. I want to root the Samsung Captivate so I can delete AT&T bloatware, and open the ability to install from third party sources. However, I have two questions that are pretty simple, but I'm so used to jail breaking my iPhone, that I don't know how to do this.

1. Backups- I'm fairly certain that AT&T or someone disapproves of rooting, so I want to have a way to restore my system back to the modified version. Is there a way I can store a backup of the crappy version of the Android OS on my PC that I can upload back on the phone in case I need to send it back.

2. rooting guide- Is there a preferred way to root the Samsung Captivate? I don't really know if there is more than one to do this, and want to make sure I don't brick my phone.

First of all you'll have to learn that what you have is not a "Droid", rather it's a phone that runs Android. Droid is specific to certain Verizon Android phones.

1 & 2. Because of how new the Captivate is, there isn't a ton going on yet as far as root goes. The great guys at xda developers have already made the international galaxy s root work on US versions (Vibrant, Captivate, etc). I looked in the Captivate subforum (a place you'll want to be) and it sounds like all the kinks aren't worked out of the rooting process yet. I'd keep an eye on that and once everything is worked out I'm sure there will be a way for you to go into recovery mode and just reflash an unrooted rom back to the phone. No way of rooting is without risk, but if you just read the directions first, let me repeat that, read the directions first, you should be just fine. It typically takes a matter of minutes. I rooted my Droid X within 5 minutes.
