Newbie (really!)

Hi:

My name is Karl and I live in San Francisco, CA. I bought my first smart
phone two weeks ago and I have one question at the moment. I don't understand what WiFi is. I mean, I can still get the internet w/o using WiFi
and no, my phone is not plugged into an ac/dc outlet. I understand that
WiFi is radio waves. But if I can still get the internet without it, why does
this option exist?

WiFi is using internet from a different source, like from you house, through your router, or a free WiFi from a cafe etc..
