Root Newbie rooting basic questions...

glasswave

Newbie
Just picked up a Razr max & an unlimited talk/text/data plan for a $100! Sorry for not doing all the requisate research, but I'm on a six week motorcycle tour and camping in remote places which has hindered my ability to do a lot of searching/reading. I have never had a smart phone before so I am quite the newb, but I am fairly technically inclined. I have had an iPad for a few months that my work gave to me (not impressed), so I know a little about the iOS.

I plan to learn a lot more while I am traveling, but for now, I'd like to get it set up to use as a wi-fi hotspot and/or for tethering. I think that in order to make this work I will need to unlock and root it. Bfeore I do this I have a number of questions.

1. Should I upgrade to ICS before I root? I like the idea of being able to group my apps into folders, I want to use my phone as a GSM phone when I travel internationally and other things so I'll need the ICS UG eventually anyways.

2. Should I UG to Verizon's ICS or another ICS after I root?

3. As I recall from May or June, there was a new super easy to use root and un-root utility, now I can't seem to find it. What is the generally accepted best/easiest root/unroot SW?

4. Will I lose my contacts after I UG to ICS or root?

5. After I root, I want to set my phone up to tether or better yet, to be used as a wi-fi hot spot. Ideally, I'd like to use my razr as a wireless access point for my iPad 2 while I am riding and then for my laptop when I am camping for the night (if I am in a 3d/4g area of course). What is the best app to use to accomplish this?

6. I'd like to place my Razr in the clear vinyl pouch on my tank bag and operate it via the touch screen. Is there a way to make the Razr screen stay on when the device is powered?

I appogize again for all the newbie questions w/o much searching, but I must hit the road again on Mon/Tues & want to get all this set up before then. I have been looking thru the faqs, but most just come up as 1% symbols w/no info asscoiated (exp 9, chrome 16, ff 3.6).

Thanks in advance for all the advice!

1. You won't be able to keep root if you ota, so no
2. it sounds like you want to stay stock
3. droid razr utility 1.81 + voodoo rootkeeper for temp unrooting
4. no, and no
5. foxfi is popular, but theres a dozen other apps that will do it. I use pdanet.
6. ics doesn't have a "screen always on" mode for whatever reason, but most apps that you'd care about using while riding do, IE pandora and navigation both have screen lock features.

edit: just do the OTA, root with razr utility. anything else will invovle a data wipe, etc.

Unless you just WANT to root, nothing you've mentioned requires it. Take the ICS OTA update and be done with it :)

5) Download FoxFi from the Play Store, you can wireless tether (hotspot) without root. Note that sometimes this doesn't seem to work if the Razr WiFi is on, you may need to turn it off to tether.
6) Go to settings > developers options > stay awake.
