Newbie

Hi, when i registered the forum told me to come here and say hi - so I'm not being shy.

A bit about the techy me: I'm great with computer applications - but when it comes to a new phone I'm like a complete idiot!

DH has just bought me a Samsung Galaxy S2 and I think I will need a lot of help figuring out how it works!

Bye for now
Lisa

What is rooting (has a completely different meaning in NZ)?

Rooting is basically "hacking" or acquiring administrative access to your device and modifying it way more then you could before rooting it. Like removing/adding a completely new custom OS to your phone or removing bloatware carrier apps or forcing them to your SD card. There's much more you can do when you are rooted and if you're interested in rooting your device, then the best place to go is to your devices all root forums. I must warn, that rooting can have drawbacks such as voiding your warranty and the potential risk of bricking or in other words breaking your device. So before you consider rooting your device, please do a lot of research and do your homework on it before attempting it. Each device has it's own method of rooting so you must find the correct root method for your device.

Rooting is gaining access to the root of the system or obtaining the ability to manage the phone's hidden files in other words. People root so that they can change the complexion of the phone. You can remove unwanted factory installed apps and even change the rom the phone is using. Most if not all carriers consider this a violation of one's warranty.. and there is always the risk of making an error in the process and turning the phone into a nice door stop. But many consider it a worth while adventure... changing their phone to be more to their liking.. speeding it up.. removing unwanted junk.. and basically customizing the phone so it's more personally tuned to the users.
