1. Manufacturer - Google/Samsung
2. Model - Nexus 10
3. Software version - 4.4.4
4. Specifics of the problem - can't flash any ROM or recovery
5. Specify if the phone is rooted. Yes
Background:
a year or so ago I rooted using Wugfresh's tookit. all went well. Last week, when trying to move some data off the nexus back onto my PC, I inadvertently picked up a folder. I had no idea which one I'd picked up so I dropped it nowhere in particular thinking I could then find out which one it was and put it back where it came from but as soon as I'd dropped it it seemed that practically all the data on the SD card had been deleted.
All the apps seem to work - though they've lost all their related data (e.g. Copilot has lost it's maps, Kingsoft has no Docs etc.) and I can't find any of it with Explorer (Internal Storage shows 23GB free of 27GB).
Figuring that I've made a mess of the phones storage and that a fresh start was needed I thought I'd take the opportunity to upgrade to Lollipop and tried to run the latest Wugfresh toolkit but this time things didn't go well:
Step one:
I managed (once) to get past the driver test but then the process kept failing when I tried to take a backup saying "ADB Server is out of date - killing"!
I'm finding that the toolkit will only run once and then needs to be re-installed to run again so not ideal.
Step two:
I had the standard OTA Lollipop upgrade waiting so I tried to run that. Process started and then just seemed to quit and I was back to home screen.
Step three:
I can't find any backup/recovery files on the Nexus so thought I'd try loading a standard Google 4.4.4 file which I downloaded to PC. I struggled to get this transferred to device over USB but Airdroid worked. Tried to flash it (from TWRP I think) but it failed because "NO MD5 file found" (I think it said).
Step four:
Found this thing called ADB sideload in TWRP and a nice video showing how to do it. It got as far as the PC telling me it was "sending file 1%" but nothing happened on the device (no progress messages in TRWP screen)
It seems the USB comms is an issue but I can see the storage of the Nexus from the PC fine (I don't understand about ADB and why that seems to be different).
I do have a folder on my PC that contains a file called "boot.img" and another called nandroid.md5. I do find Android a bit confusing so I'm not sure how all the various Recovery methods relate (Nandroid, CWM, Titanium, TWRP etc.) and what I can do with this file. Sorry for being such a dummy!
Given that the unit is still working, if not very well, I can't help feeling that someone who knew what they were doing would have this sorted in a trice. Can anyone steer me in the right direction pls?
