It depends on how you're trying to connect the Nexus 4. If you want to connect it in order to simply drop and drag files to and from the device, then it sounds like the mtp drivers aren't getting automatically installed correctly. If you're looking to use adb or fastboot to unlock the bootloader or other various things, then those drivers aren't installed and are much more difficult to install because windows 8 is very strict about installing unsigned drivers.
