I bought my son a
BasAcc - 6 FT SuperSpeed USB-C to USB 3.0 Cable Cord.

He refuses to use it, worrying it will fry his phone. I bought from BEST Buy from another seller.

Anyone have any success or using this cable?

I can't find much information (good or bad) about that cable. Your son is right to be concerned, though - there are a number of incorrectly-made USB A-to-C cables that can do serious damage to devices. There are a bunch of articles and posts on the subject, but the short of it is that I'd only recommend using an A-to-C cable found on this list of approved ones:
