Nexus 7...and thats all!!

Surviving 9 month on a military deployment with JUST a nexus 7...and loving it!

I am currently using a Nexus 7 32GB, I have had to overcome some hurdles and hopefully this little review could eventually help someone in the future.

SPECS:
Nexus 7: 32GB
Stock Rom: 4.2.2
Rooted: Yes
Unlocked: Yes

Accesories:
USB OTG Cable
Orange 3G wifi stick
16GB USB Flash Drive
Sienhieser Headphones

I first started my deployment off with the purchase of a Nexus 7. Having previously owned a Galaxy Nexus as my last phone I thought why not. After initially setting up my galaxy nexus I thought about buying a 300-400 laptop for my deployment just in case I ran into some problems...I HAVENT.

I am completely portable, able to charge quick and last longer than all of these ipads floating around, and I can download from torrents, transfer movies VIA flash, and connect to a 3G Network when my WiFi is catching a million users.

If anyone here is looking to try their deployment out with JUST a Nexus 7 I would highly suggest it. Its working great for me. Even if you had hardline internet there is a peripheal that would allow you to directly connect.

A couple things I am currently looking for and a couple questions I have.

1.) Stock Music player - Is there anything remotely better that I can use that can keep my torrented music files neat, clean and orderly? Some of my artwork just bleeds over for about 5 albums.

2.) What would you recommend for a tough and durable case? I am thinking of plunging in to buy Otterbox's case, but currently I am rocking gamestop's grey Nexus Case.

3.) Is there anything you would recommend that could be done that I havent?

First things first, thank you for your service! Here's to hoping for a safe and speedy return! :thumb:

Secondly, glad you're enjoying the N7! It's definitely a heck of a device!

Feel free to drop a line whether android related or not:

Hey man.. here is a good article on available free music players for android. I have always found Gizmo's articles to be well thought through and pretty comprehensive.

Best Free Music Player and Organizer for Android

I have been using my Nexus 7 primarily as a book, news and forums reader, though I do a lot more than that. The recent news that google reader is being retired really sucked to hear yesterday. That program rocks for staying up on the news you want to hear. I subscribe to around 10 different news feeds and blogs out there, and I loved it for getting all my news in one place.

I went ahead and bought the Tapatalk app for 3 bucks to stay on top of my many forum subscriptions, and I could not be more pleased with it. Again, everything in one easy to read place.

I use teamviewer to remotely connect into my home computer, control it from where-ever I am, and remotely transfer files too and from my nexus.. Another awesome free app.

I still have a company Blackberry with unlocked mobile hotspot. I use this to serve up an internet connection and a gps signal to my nexus 7, and it works great. I got a dashboard stand for the nexus 7 from Amazon for about 12 bucks, and it works as a very good gps.

Good luck!

Hi, responses in seriatim to the highlighted queries in your post.
- You don't really need to transfer movies/any other data to the N7's internal memory.
Since your tab is rooted, just install an app called Stickmount from the PlayStore. That will enable you to read/write off your OTG cable/flash drive combo.
- The best music player is PowerAmp. There's a free 15 day trial of the full featured version available off the Play Store. Try it, you'll like it.
- The otterbox defender series case is great. Go for it.
Other recommendations- if you could list out in full what activities you use your N7 for, suggestions can be made.
Regards.

Kamal Hans -

I have been using my OTG Cable with Stick mount, EXCELLENT APP. The otterbox would serve me pretty well seeing as my nexus stays in the bag when im on the move. I think it would absorb alot of the drop and abuse while its zipped up.

I primarily use my Nexus to review some Excel, Word and other MS documents but I wish someone would create an App that would let me ATLEAST view XFDL docs. PureEdge or Lotus Notes has yet to come out with anything, but this should be forth coming seeing as Big brother is switching to good ol android.

I primarily use my N7 for music, movies, games and anything else to keep myself busy. Anything that you could recommend diving into for research or just to play with would be great.

MusicLover7 -

I have yet to try TapaTalk but I see the name pop up quiet frequently. I guess something like that would serve well then having to actually log on to my UNCLASS. Any other apps you would recommend other than Pulse to stay in tune with some sites/forums?

I have some PRETTY LOW bandwidth seeing as I am somewhere that has LIMITED internet connection. Splashtop seemed WAY to low and im looking for a Call app that I can connect to rather than Skype. I tried Viber but the country I am in is not supported and HideMan still wont even let me access it.

Apart from Pulse, try Flipboard, Pininterest,StumbleUpon fro very interesting content-just StumbleUpon can keep you engrossed for hours.
News 360, for, guess what-news!
TuneIn is the best for a huge variety of music, thousands of internet radio stations, Moon Reader Pro for reading- embedded links for lots of books, free books too.
For movies, I found BS Player the best , esp for playing movies off the lash drive.
Then there's Sky Map( Play Store- books & ref category) fro live night sky map- excellent.
Games- wide variety in the Play Store- favs- Angry Birds, Temple Run2, fruit Ninja, Subway surfer... take your pick.
Toolkit- for a number of very interesting & useful tools- torch, spirit level, timer, scale, spl meter, compass etc etc.
Try these, I'll send some more reccs soon.
Regards.

While your post was very good, my "thanks" is for your service...appreciate you!

As for players, have you checked XBMC out?

XBMC

If you have questions about add-ons (after visiting the site above, you'll see that XBMC goes way beyond being a good music player), the folks at XBMC Hub are very anxious to help:

Movies Online with XBMC | Free TV Channels on XBMC

I have a Spotify subscription, so I don't really use XBMC for music, but I do watch a lot of content on it via my N7 almost daily and it runs very well for my needs.

Hope this helps and thanks, again!

I have been searching for a good Google reader replacement. Life hacker had a good article on the subject recently, which is how I got turned on to freely. Check it out. Nice app.
