Root Nexus 7 storage solutions.

As I'm sure many have, I'm running out of space on my Nexus. I wanted to know if I simply get a mini USB to female USB adapter to use flash media. I've heard there might be unseen problems.

Firstly you need a OTG cable rather than a simple adapter (which won't work).

Secondly you need software, since the Nexus 7 does not support external USB storage natively. There are two options available:

1. Stickmount - free but requires root access.
2. Nexus Media Importer - not free (but cheap!), doesn't require root, can also write to most USB storage devices despite the app's name.

I use the latter, it works well for me :-)

Thanks for your help this could save me wasting valuable time and money. Since I would have an active USB port. Would I be able to use such things as USB controllers. But or even a 3/4G dongle

Yes and no. Depends.

I imagine the Nexus 7 doesn't recognise all possible USB devices so I can only answer for those I know work from personal experience. I haven't used any USB controllers or wireless dongles I'm afraid, only less exotic stuff like keyboards and mice - which all worked fine.

Best option is to buy your OTG cable (mine is a cheap one from Amazon) and get your storage device(s) working before trying your other USB bits to see what works.

I can't comment on the dongle, but both the dual shock PS3 and wired Xbox controllers work. I'm relatively sure there's a logitech controller that works too.
