Nexus media importer help

Hello, i download the nexus media importer. i plug the usb stick to the otg cable. i then plug it to my nexus 7 . in media importer it says "Connecting usb.. Waiting for Media". So all this time it is just connecting and says Waiting for media. the cable does work.. help

Plug the cable into the nexus first then the stick into the cable

You tried a different USB stick?

yea i tried 2 Kingston usb sticks and a micro sd with adapter. it detects it but just keeps saying Waiting for Media...
