Help NFC help

just ordered the xperia tags as i haven't a clue which others would work but will NFC task Launcher be able to work on the xperia tags?

Yes it should... The most activity for NFC questions I have come across are with the Galaxy Nexus (although I am sure there is a lot in the Nexus S forums too, since that device really "launched" NFC use with Android), below are some links to threads both here and elsewhere with a lot of good info for your perusal:

Real Life NFC Use - xda-developers

Nfc tags for dummies (I'm the dummy) - xda-developers

NFC - anyone able to read their US Passport? - xda-developers

There are a few more, but I am having trouble tracking them down...

There is a lot of excitement and interest in this feature...

I currently have one (from Tagstand) in my generic car-charger so that my phone enters "Car Mode" when placed in it, and I have one on the door to my house so I just tap the phone to the tag and it turns wifi on and connects me, and another one on my night stand that opens the "Clock" app. These actions are all done with NFC Task Launcher, it is a great app (albeit a little confusing at first).

When buying tags for the Galaxy Nexus pre-ICS 4.0.3 (so One X should be fine), we had to buy already formatted tags (Tagstand did this)because the phone could not do formatting- again this was fixed in 4.0.3+. Also, pay attention to the tag size- 16 - 64KB (like some of the MiFares) is enough for a URL or (some simple) single command, step up to the larger sizes for more complex commands. Also pay attention to the tag material, there are tags made to be used outdoors, don't buy the paper ones and expect them to withstand a fair amount of weather (if used outdoors).

Check out Tagstand's site (www.tagstand.com) too, their prices are a touch high (once you know what to look for), but they have lots of good info on their site.

thanks very much for all the info s.m.knipe i look forward to learn more about the tech.
I'm surprised there hasn't been more made of this tech though, it just seems such a great idea, i really hope the market for this broadens with more handsets having this feature.
Is it possible to print onto the stickers, they do seem rather bland, or is that the point?

It looks like most of the sites selling the tags offer a custom printing service, I know Tagstand does and it appears this site ("buynfctags.com" whom I had also priced in the past) does as well...

O.K got the tags and realised they can't do as much as i'd like, overall i'm happy to mess around with them, one odd thing though, i use NFC task launcher to put my phone into airplane mode but when i use it to turn airplane mode off the Mobile signal doesn;t get enabled and i have to do it manually.
Now got tasker too but it seems complicated, just don't seem to get to do all i want to do.

hmm... peruse those forums I linked to above, in one of them someone was trying to do exactly what you describe, and they got it to work, but I forget how... Two separate tags maybe (one for the airplane and one for re-enabling signal?), or with the "Tasker" app I think you can make shorter commands so you can fit more per tag, as most of the code is stored on the device in the app, and the tags just contain short "triggers," maybe that was the solution...
The developer of the NFC Tag Launcher app cruises pretty much most of the android forums, so there's a good chance he'll see this thread and be able to comment. I forget his handle he uses though...

Are the tags from this site universal? They'll work with the HTC One X? I've got my HTC One X preordered from work and really would like to play with NFC tags.

NFC has standards governing the frequencies and such to use it, yes, they are universal. The only issue I know of was that pre Android 4.0.3 (which is what the One X) runs), where the phone could not format new tags... but that was resolved in android 4.0.3+.

great! I wasn't sure if there was a specific brand I was supposed to buy.

Nope, if they are NFC tags, you should be good to go...

It really hasn't taken off yet, have fun playing with technology ahead of the curve so-to-speak!
