Nissan Rogue

The wife is thinking about getting a Nissan Rogue next month. It will not be brand new but maybe a 2011 or 2012.

What do you guys think about it? Does it ride good, is it worth buying used? Good and or bad advice is welcome. I like it but never rode in one, except test driving and it rides pretty good.

Thnx.

I looked at a new 2013 Rogue a few weeks ago. Before I buy I always look at and drive the competition. Personally, I'm a Mazda guy but, if there is another brand that is better for me, then it makes sense to get it.

The 2012-14 Rogue has 170 HP / 175 Torque @ 4400RPM, fairly standard in the CUV catagory. Gas mileage will vary depending on driving style, weight added to the vehicle, terrain, weather temp, altitude, etc. EPA ratings are never correct.

A few things swayed me to the 2014 Mazda CX-5 GT. The drive: Mazda has the sporty road handling that Honda, Toyota, Nissan and a few others are missing. The interior layout is excellent, the controls are pretty much exactly where I want them to be. Having the GT with Tech pack I'm spoiled by having all the options possible. Engine in the CX-5 is a SkyActiv 2.5L with 184 HP / 185 Torque at 3250RPM, so not only does it have more power but you get to that power faster. Capacity-wise with the 2nd row up the Rogue has 39.3cu. ft. and the CX-5 has 34cu. ft., not a big difference. Now for the looks, which is again a personal thing, however, I again think it looks a lot better design-wise.

All that said, a good deal on a Rogue is fine. If the car fits, drive it :-) ...to add: the Rogue would be my personal 2nd choice.

Thanks for the info. The same dealer have a Mazda lot across the street, so we may go look at some Mazdas. We did test drive a 2012 Ford Escape today. She really like it, I guess because it was loaded and had a good price.

I'll keep you informed on how things turn out.

Another Mazda CX-5 owner here, have had mine since April 2013. I bought the CX-5 Sport model to get the 6 speed manual transmission. Too bad this transmission isn't offered on the GT AWD models, because the gas mileage is awesome. My average mpg is about 32, combined city/highway driving in Los Angeles. The handling is very sporty and agile.

I considered the Nissan Rogue but wasn't totally sold on the CVT transmission. I'd driven a Murano a few years back, and the CVT seemed jumpy and jerky all the time. I'd hope that they've worked out those kinks now. Best that you drive them both and get a good feel before you plunk down your cash.

BTW, I bought my first Mazda 626 at Lou Fusz over 25 years ago. I remember they had a very nice service department.

Good point from cwcheese which I totally overlooked. I'll admit I'm no expert on this but CVTs aren't really my thing either. Through certain circles I was told that CVTs are not repairable and the whole tranny needs to be replaced. Whether that is true or not I don't know. The Mitsubishi RVR which has CVT as well is under-powered, about 148HP.

Look like the wife may be going with the Escape. Do the Escape have the CVT transmission? I believe so. We'll know by next Tuesday.

@cwcheese, we bought our current Sentra from Lou Fusz in '06. It has been very reliable but now time to turn it in.

I'm not sure what it compares to but we have a Toyota Venza that's very nice and comfortable. No problems in four years. Besides oil changes. That's how they get you.

The wife decided to go with the Escape. I guess because it is fully loaded. After driving it, I see what you mean about the CVT transmission, I really don't like how it rides.
Oh well, she the one who will make the payments. :)

So the 2012 Escape does have the CVT? I could be wrong but the 2.5L 4cyl they have in the Limited is not CVT according to a few sites. There are 3 engine levels, which one is yours?

I think only the Escape models equipped with Hybrid drivetrain have CVT, the others have normal transmissions.

My wife got a 2013 Rogue in November of 2012. She likes it. It's a good car for her. I like the way it rides even with CVT. Not much to complain about I guess. I don't drive it much. maybe 8 times a year.
