no data plan at&t

Hey guys,

I was wondering whether or not I could use the phone without a data plan and relying on the campus wifi (and home and Starbucks and a few other places). Basically an Ipod touch combined with a phone without carrying both on me all the time.

Currently, At&t is my provider and I was wondering if I could unlock the vibrant and just put my sim card in. Would that work because I heard of the new policy At&t has with smartphone. Is there anyway I could use a smartphone without paying for the data plan?

Thanks alot

I have been using my vibrant without a data plan for awhile under Tmobile. Not sure about at and t. I don't see why not,.

You can, but then At&t can also detect your device and add a data plan to your bill just for grins

It seems if the device is NOT an At&t sold device your odds are better they will not recognize it, but you always run the risk.

Personally, I don't see anything with having a smartphone without data, if you aren't going to use it and only pay and use the phone features.
