Help no data plan, is this safe?

Hi,
I received my locked G1 yesterday and right away bought an unlock code, I received the code today and I unlocked my phone to the AT&T network. I have already activated it.

*However, I don't have a data plan for AT&T, I can only make and receive calls and text. How can I make sure that data is turned off so to not incur charges for data?

I don't want a really high bill. I want to be able to use internet on wi-fi because it is pretty much everywhere and it is free.

*I turned off data roaming and auto sync, am I ok now? just trying to make sure.

Did you turn off 3G as well? (I think the setting is actually "2G data only") That will both save you some battery, and help ensure that you've covered all of the data access angles.
