no notification of phone calls or texts

I have a nexus 4. On the home screen I'm not notified of missed calls, voice messages or texts
 
Notifications will show up on the notification tray which is the bar at the to left of the screen. If you touch the top of the screen and drag downward, it will open up the tray and show you your notifications.
