No Notification of Text Message

My Motorola Droid 4 text message icon does not show me that I have received messages.
There is no number showing on the icon. Yet when I open it there will be messages there.
What can I do to have it show me there are messages there?

I would check in the settings for the messaging app, it should be there, might be unchecked. Are you also using a 3rd party app ?? If you decide to join I will post the link to your device forum, with a little more detail I am sure we will be able to guide and help you according.
