Help No Notifications in Gmail

Anyone ever have GMail notifications randomly stop? Mine have been fine ever since I got my phone last summer, but in the last couple days I've stopped getting any sort of notifications from gmail. I've verified that notifications are turned on, and a handful of other ideas I'd found in other forums, including:
  • Uninstalling updates to the gmail app
  • Removing and re-adding my gmail account
  • Disabling battery optimization for the gmail app to prevent it from being put to sleep
So far nothing has worked, and the only way I see my messages is if I manually open the app and check for them.

Any ideas?

Have you tried clearing data for the GMail app? Mine got into a similar state once and that fixed it (of course it's not my primary email app, so this was no great inconvenience to me to do this, and indeed I only tried it fix it because I was curious about what would do that). No guarantees of course, because the cause might be different.

Have you done anything with your Google account, or Google Services Framework data, or anything Google related, before this happened? It was fiddling of that sort that broke it for me (clearing data for Google Services Framework I think).

I hadn't cleared it, but I just did and so far that doesn't seem to have made a difference.

I haven't done anything out of the ordinary with my account or my phone lately- just the typical application updates from the Play store. Samsung did push down a system update not too long ago, but it worked for a few days after that update was applied, so that shouldn't be the problem.

Have you checked the settings in settings, apps, gmail, mobile data? Make sure allow background data is checked and if you have data saver turned on make sure you also tick allow app while data saver on.

Also do you have any power saving mode selected as this can cut off background data from apps.

I've checked all of the settings I could find, and I keep power saving mode turned off so that no apps are put to sleep unless I specifically allow it.
It's weird- since I made the original post, I seem to be getting Gmail notifications about half the time. Some days, I'll get them just like normal, and others I won't hear a peep from Gmail, but if I happen to open the app, I'll see a dozen or more unread messages queued up and waiting for me. It seems to be getting better, so maybe it was an issue on their end, but I still end up with missing notifications some of the time.
