No Notifications on Moto 360 (1)

Ever since upgrading to Marshmallow, no matter how many times I unpair, reset the watch, remove various watch faces from my HTC M8, or play with permissions on the watch and phone, the notifications on my gen 1 Moto 360 work for about an hour and then stop completely.

It may be related, but I also have an issue where watch faces and apps that I had installed previously don't seem to want to appear on the watch or in the Android Wear app.

Should the software versions on the phone and watch (see below) match each other? If so, how do I force that to happen?

Any advice? Thanks!

Versions reported on watch
Android Wear: 1.4.0.2580363
Google Play Services: 8.6.98 (2574714-534)
Android OS: 6.0.1

Versions reported on phone
Android Wear: 1.5.0.2951640.gms
Google Play Services: 9.0.83 (438-121911109)
Andoid OS: 6.0

Unpair the watch.
Remove the android wear app
Clear the phones cache. Use you favorite search engine to find the steps to do this
Reinstall android wear
Factory reset the watch. This will remove all settings and faces from memory and revert it back to out of the box status.
Re-pair the watch.
Give it some time to optimize and setup the apps on it (you should see some updates to this). Leave it alone for half an hour.

Test the result.
